What is hypebaric oxygen therapy?

In hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a person is placed in an hyperbarci oxygen chamber, where the air pressure is raised significantly higher than that of regular environment. As a result, many times more oxygen reach the tissues of the body.

Why is the pressure important? Think about making a lemonade for a moment. If you just blow into the water, the bubbles won't stay there. A higher pressure is needed to dissolve the gas in the liquid. In making the lemonade, pressure is used to dissolve carbon dioxide in the liquid and have a tasty drink as a result. The same happens in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber - under pressure, the oxygen in the air dissolves in body fluids and reaches every cell in many times larger quantities than usual.

In a normal state, oxygen is carried throughout the body by red blood cells, which are usually at least 96% or more saturated with oxygen. Thus, by administering oxygen, we can increase oxygenation by only a few percentage points. However, under pressure, oxygen dissolves in all body fluids, including blood plasma, which does not normally carry oxygen. The amount of oxygen in the body increases significantly, and the pressure pushes it deeper into the tissues.

Oxygen is the most important nutrient for the functioning of every cell. It revitalizes all cells, whether in the body or the brain, and makes them work effectively again.

If there are damaged areas in the body, then the fine capillary network on the micro level, which carries oxygen and nutrients to the problem areas, has been destroyed in those places. The result is a poorer ability to heal. Repeated successive sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which push oxygen deep into the damaged tissues, grow back the fine capillary network and restore the normal oxygen supply.

For example, in the case of brain problems, often the nerve cells are not completely dead, but are in a non-functioning and dormant state. Oxygen helps to restart cell work, and the renewed capillary network makes these parts of the brain work consistently again with a good supply of nutrients.
Research in recent years has surprisingly shown that the entire effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy does not come from oxygen. It is currently believed that at least half of the healing effect comes from repeated up-and-down pressure changes instead. They trigger a cascade of signals in cells that ultimately affect epigenetics and as much as 40% of our gene expression. Oxygen therapy turns on genes involved in reducing inflammation and self-healing processes, and turns off genes involved in increased inflammation and cell death processes.

However, the healing potential of hyperbaric oxygen therapy may lie in the fact that a consecutive course causes the body to release many times more stem cells! Stem cells are primary cells that can change into any necessary cell of the body, thus healing organs and tissues. They find places in the body that need healing and are able to repair them. Stem cells also trigger other cell-healing factors.
The most important factor in hyperbaric oxygen therapy is higher pressure
Oxygen dissolves in the blood plasma and goes deeper into the tissues
Oxygen activates the work of all cells more efficiently
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy restores the fine capillary network and the supply of oxygen and nutrients to problem areas
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy changes the expression of 40% of genes, turning on self-healing mechanisms
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the body's release of stem cells, whose healing potential is immeasurable!

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not new

The healing effects of oxygen are nothing new. Hyperbaric therapy began almost 350 years ago. The very first hyperbaric therapy chamber was created in 1662. The clinical use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy began in the mid-1800s. Beginning in the 1960s, research began to discover the widespread health benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. To date, scientific research shows the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for nearly 150 different health problems.

Although the starting point of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is in the middle of the 17th century, only the last two decades have brought a breakthrough in the use of this modality. Advances in technology and science have led to the invention of advanced chambers, better protocols, and a deeper understanding of the therapeutic mechanisms of action. These developments have influenced the spread of the therapy and the growing interest among both professionals and ordinary people.
